Discover the magic of Pikka Floating Market, a canal-side market at the heart of a temple community, filled with the flavour of traditional life, delicious local food, community handicrafts and a peaceful riverside atmosphere. It is a place of smiles, kindness and warmth from local villagers, who welcome everyone sincerely.
Khlong Pikka is a major canal of great historical and cultural importance in the lower central region of Thailand. It flows from the north, connecting with Khlong Samrong and Khlong Bang Phli Noi, before running south. The canal also forms a natural boundary between two provinces, Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao.
In the past, Khlong Pikka was a bustling waterway that played a vital part in villagers’ lives, as it connected with many branch canals such as Khlong Sakat Si Sip, Khlong Sakat Paet Sip, Khlong Samaen, Khlong Khwai, Khlong Mangkon, Khlong Krachut, Khlong Nikhom and Khlong Kon Bueng. The canal was once rich and fertile, teeming with many kinds of freshwater fish. Most local people were farmers who grew rice and raised fish, and boats were the main means of travel.
Along the banks of Khlong Pikka once stood “Wat Pikka”, now Wat Pan Prasit Aram, and “Pikka Market”, a lively centre of community life and trade. It was a meeting point for people from both sides of the canal, who came to trade goods and build close relationships.
But as times changed, roads were cut through the communities and travel by water declined. People turned to roads instead of canals, and the canal’s former bustle gradually faded, leaving that lively atmosphere as a memory of days gone by.
Today, Khlong Pikka still watches over the changing lives of the people on both banks, waiting for the revival of its culture and for the bond between people and the waterway to return once more.
